There are several advantages students gain when they start a blog. Of course, the main benefit is the ability to make money from blogging, which can help pay for school or give you some extra pocket money.

If you go all-in with blogging, you can even build a full-time income able to support you after you’ve completed your schooling. Some students have even dropped out of school to pursue blogging full-time. I don’t advocate for dropping out of high school, but I am also not a huge fan of college unless you’re on track for a specialized degree (legal, medical, architecture, etc.).

Advantage #1 – Learn How To Use SEO

Blogging has the ability to help you learn how to use SEO. This is a vital skill for anybody looking to make money online or go into any type of online marketing as a business. SEO or search engine optimization will help you gain blog traffic from Google and other search engines.

I use SEO on my blog, and it accounts for a large amount of my traffic every single day. Organic traffic is some of the best traffic, and with the right SEO skills, you’ll be able to build your blog and make it successful.

Advantage #2 – Own Your Content

Whether you’re a student in high school or college, you’re learning how to write for school. Writing for school isn’t the same as writing online for your blog or writing in the business world.

I remember my high school days and writing saved me from flunking English, along with a few other classes. However, the writing I did in school was always stuffy because it was meant to be a research paper.

The style of writing you learn in school is great if you’re trying to get published in a peer-reviewed journal. However, if you want to learn how to blog, you need to learn how to write conversationally.

As far as I know, they don’t teach this in school. In fact, I didn’t even learn the proper way to write for the business world until I was out of high school and went to a specialized school for the golf industry.

Blogging allows students to learn how to write for the online world. This is a skill many employers are going to love to see on your resume. When they visit your blog and see how competent you are with writing, they will see this as an asset.

Of course, when you get into blogging for students, it could also lead to blogging for a full-time income after school.

Advantage #4 – Learn Responsibility

Blogging for students also helps to teach responsibility. According to Lumos Learning, “Blogging allows students to begin to understand the concept of journalistic responsibility, of ensuring every fact is accurate and ever comment is appropriate which can carry over to their real lives as well.”

I believe most bloggers don’t get this part correct. Unless you’re blogging strictly about your own experiences, you need to use sources and cite those sources.

Unlike the way it’s done in school, however, you can simply link to the sources when you quote them or borrow their ideas. Give credit where credit is due and become responsible with your sourcing.

Advantage #5 – Become an Expert

When you blog about something, you’ll become a student of that thing. You’ll be gaining knowledge of your subject regularly, and you’ll be on track to becoming an expert.

Whether you choose to blog about student life or you choose one of the blogging niches that make money, you’ll become an expert over time.

According to Klusster, “This won’t happen overnight, but over time, as you post more blogs and share your genuine knowledge with the community, your readers will begin to see you as an expert.”

Disadvantages of Blogging for Students

Before I list off a few of the disadvantages of blogging for students (there aren’t many), just remember, it’s not for everybody, and these disadvantages may not apply to everybody.

Disadvantage #1 – Cost

The cost can be viewed as a disadvantage because students don’t usually have much money. However, all you need to get started is a domain name and a hosting account.

Disadvantage #2 – Distraction from School

Some may find blogging as a distraction from their schooling. This is listed as a disadvantage, but it can easily be turned into an advantage.

If you want to continue your schooling, and you want to blog as a student, you will need to learn time management skills. With good time management skills, you can certainly do both, and it becomes more of a challenge to overcome than a disadvantage of blogging for students.

Disadvantage #3 – Need Patience

Another disadvantage some students may find when they start blogging is the need for patience. You won’t wake up tomorrow and have $100 in your bank account to spend as you please.

Building a blog takes time as you are creating a content library. You need to work on your blog regularly and understand; you will reach the tipping point if you keep putting in the time and effort.

When you reach the tipping point, blogging becomes easier, and you start to get far more traffic without nearly as much work. Patience will become an advantage, at this point, as well.

Disadvantage #4 – Not Very Social

One of the true disadvantages of blogging is the lack of social interaction. I am not referring to the conversations you will likely have on social media or in the comments section of your blog. I am referring to in-person social interaction.

Bloggers have to work hard to make sure they still get in-person social time. As a student, this should be a bit easier as you will have classes to attend and other events on campus regularly.

There aren’t really any other disadvantages to blogging for students. It’s a great way to build writing skills and make money online if you stick to it, you have patience, and you build your time management skills.

The importance of blogging for students is growing every single year. Conversational writing skills are far more important today than they ever have been. As long as the internet is around, blogging will be a very important skill to master.

As a student, your job is to learn. Blogging fits perfectly into this, as blogging is all about learning.

You can start a blog about anything, even if you don’t know much about it. Just use your research skills and learn.

As you learn, blog about what you’re learning about and sprinkle in some SEO, along with other marketing methods. If you do this, you’ll find success as a student blogger.

I am an advocate for everybody having a blog. Whether you run a business or you’re a student, I think having a blog is a great way to express yourself, learn about something new, talk about what’s bothering you, and make money online.
