Working full-time may not be enough to pay the bills, have extra cash, and enjoy life. It may leave you searching for answers to, “how can I make extra money while working full-time?”

Of course, the simplest answer is taking on a second job or working overtime, if it’s offered. However, these are probably not the answers you’re looking for. Let’s look a bit closer at this question and find some practical answers to “how can I make extra money while working full-time?”

How Much Time do You Have Left?

How can I Make Extra Money While Working Full Time

Before we get into a few of the ways you can make extra money while working full-time, we need to establish the time you have left. This will vary for each person, but let’s assume the following:

  • You work a 40-hour job Monday through Friday
  • Your commute is the average in the US, which is 26.1 minutes. We will just assume 26 minutes.
  • You eat lunch as a part of your work-day and its right on par with the average of 36 minutes for lunch. (I will round down to 30 minutes to make the math a bit easier.)
  • You eat breakfast as you’re basically walking out the door in the morning.
  • You eat dinner at home and prepare it most nights, so it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes total.
  • You sleep the average number of hours for an American of 6.8 hours; we will round up to 7 hours for this example.
  • You attend church on Sundays, which takes a total of 2 hours with drive time, getting ready, going, etc.

Here’s how your 168 weekly hours currently breaks down:

  • 5 hours at work (assuming 30 minutes, unpaid for lunch)
  • 4 hours and 20 minutes commuting to and from work
  • 49 hours sleeping
  • 2 hours for church on Sundays
  • 5 hours eating/preparing dinner
  • 59 hours 40 minutes for other things

While this doesn’t calculate in time at the gym, time with family, relaxation, etc. It gives a little bit of an insight into the time you should have left to make extra money even though you’re working full-time.

Even if you can just find 10 hours per week (maybe 5 hours on Saturdays and another hour per day Monday through Friday) you can make extra money while working full-time.

7 Top Ways to Make Extra Money While Working Full-Time

Make Extra Money While Working Full Time

1. Freelancing

One of the easiest ways to make money while working full-time is to freelance. I actually started my freelance writing business while working 30+ hours a week behind a bar. It was supposed to be a way to make extra cash and exploded into a job replacement solution.

If you can find a few hours a week to write or do another freelancing task, you can make extra money even though you work full-time. It’s really pretty easy and once you have a few clients, it’s as simple as writing articles and getting paid.

You can find plenty of websites that pay writers with my FREE list of 100+ Websites that Pay Writers here.

2. Start a Blog

Another way to make extra money while working full-time is to start a blog. With a blog, you’ll have to be patient as it will take time to build up your content library, but the payoff can be huge!

You can monetize your blog in many different ways from paid advertising to sponsorships to selling your own products. Many bloggers have started making a full-time income from their blogs and they started while working a full-time job doing something else.

Starting a blog doesn’t have to be difficult, either. You can use my How to Become a Blogger guide found here to get started today.

3. Sell on Etsy

Creating things, such as T-shirts, mugs, and other items people like to buy is a great way to make extra money while working full-time. The best part, you don’t have to carry an inventory. There are several sites that allow you to design t-shirts and other items to sell on Etsy without carrying any inventory.

Three of the best options include:

There are tons of guides and Youtube videos all about how to design T-shirts and make money online.

4. Affiliate Marketing

A great way to cash in online is to use affiliate marketing to make extra money online while working a full-time job. With the right training, you can make a living with affiliate marketing and it can certainly start in your spare time.

Clickbank University is one of the best training programs for new affiliate marketers. If you’re willing to invest in learning the process and building a website or blog, you’ll be able to make some serious cash with affiliate marketing.

Some of the best affiliate marketers work less than 10 hours a week and make six or seven figures a year. Even if you just make a few hundred dollars a week, you can easily make an extra $1,000 a month from affiliate marketing. What could you do with that extra cash?

5. Become a Vlogger

Make Extra Money Vlogging

A very popular way to make extra money online while working full-time is to shoot videos and become a vlogger. Yes, this can become time-consuming very fast, but it doesn’t have to.

If you throw away all the tips about editing and making your videos perfect, you can make a daily video in less than an hour a day. Just pick a niche you already know very well and create a list of topics you can talk about intelligently.

Then, block off time every single day to shoot a video. If you don’t have time to shoot and upload a video daily, create a few per week.

Like blogging, this won’t make you much cash early on, but the payoff can be huge. If you don’t worry about editing your videos, this is a great way to make money in your spare time.

6. Sell Your Photos

Do you love taking pictures? If so, you can turn photography into extra cash by selling your pictures online. Many websites offer this option and all you have to do is upload pictures every single time you go out and take them.

With a few hours a week shooting and uploading, you can build an extra source of income that will pay you even when you don’t add more pictures.

7. Virtual Assistant

If you want to make extra money while working full-time and you want it to be rather quick, you can become a virtual assistant. You’ll assist others with tasks, such as making phone calls, posting to social media, research, and more.

This is a simple online job you can do and make $15 to $20 per hour. It’s not the most lucrative on the list, but you can early $100+ per week in your spare time as a virtual assistant.

Which Options Would I Choose?

If I was saddled with a full-time job and had 10 to 20 hours a week to make extra cash, I’d use a combination of three options on this list, maybe four:

I would find two or three solid clients to write for and I would start writing daily for my own blog. Affiliate marketing would be how I monetize my blog and I would turn every blog post into a video when I have time.

My time would be split about half towards freelance writing clients (to make immediate cash) and half to my own blog. As my blog started to make money, I would start to cut back on the freelance clients and replace them with vlogging.
